Horror Games

I had impulses to make a 2-D side scrolling horror flash game over the past few weeks, and I have been thinking what has some conventional successful highly praised horror games done in order to be, well, successful; and how can I translate that into the 2D world. The few games that I picked to analyse was Silent Hill 2, Death Space (1 and 2) and based on multiple reviews, the "most scary" modern game, Amnesia.

First, I look into each game plot wise. It seems to me, all three games has a common theme. A defective memory, or having incomplete knowledge of the situation. In Silent Hill 2, the protagonist selectively forget about the event of him murdering his wife. He started off searching for his wife in the beginning of the game in Silent Hill, despite knowing she died. He encounter monsters that are the manifestations of his "Sin". He found a woman that resembles his wife physically, but her personality contrast his wife's introvert personality. She is found killed multiple times, but she appears alive again every time and seems to not recall being killed. Approaching the end of the game, he realize and finally accept that he is the one who killed his wife, and confronts his "fake" wife who is the final boss of the game.

In Death Space 1 and 2, the protagonist follows his girlfriend's instructions to help get to her and out of the infected space station. Near the end, he saw a video where his girlfriend actually suicides even before he arrived at the space station. It turns out that the girlfriend is actually the "Marker", a device turning people into monsters, projecting illusions to make use of the protagonist.

In amnesia, well, the protagonist had an amnesia at the start of the game. He found a letter written by his former self instructing him to find someone in the castle and kill him. He also state that he deliberately choose to erase his own memory. However, despite that, the protagonist eventually remembers the events that has happen by finding his own diaries, and flash backs when he travel through the castle.

It is cold. Chilly, one might say. Snow flakes falling gracefully, reflecting the colorful Christmas lights. It is physically cold, but there is warmth in the heart; the atmosphere filled by festival music sung by the choirs in the nearby church, the scenery filled with people cuddling, hugging and kissing, children's laughters and snowballs flying being thrown at each other. Among the people, Kale sets his eyes on one; that lonely girl with the moderately short golden hair, ragged flat fringes covering her small "sad" eyebrows, half-covered eyes that accompanies her sweet "carefree" look, standing there just under the garden clock, waiting. She checks her watch another time, leaving an opening for Kale to sneak in front of her.

Kale approaches her with a wide smile on his serious face. He could not help but notice the snow accumulated the dent of the Christmas hat she was wearing; it signifies how long she have been waiting. "Sally," he calls. Sally looked up and immediately gave Kale a sweet smile on her pale face. Kale is gripping on something. It is a gift. No, it is more than a gift.It is a box, inside the box, it is a ring. A wedding ring. Kale remembers that today he is going to propose to this lady standing in front of him. His heart pounds harder and harder, cold sweat dripped from his forehead to his chin. Sally looked confused, but she knows this is not how Kale normally behaves. She knows him well. In fact, she knew Kale for almost her entire life. "What's wrong?" Sally asked gently, as if she's speaking carefully to a stranger. Kale gets down on his feet, open his palm revealing the small "box" containing something of a much greater value. Sally smiled. No words was spoken, but it is already obvious enough to tell what is going on. Sally's heart pounds, as if it is resonating Kale's nervous heart-beat-rate. She reaches her hand out even before Kale says a word. They look at each other. That's all they need to do to communicate.

A large shell fell from the sky hitting the ground below. Kale is shocked, but kept his cool so his movement cannot be seen obviously. Underneath Kale was a large tropical forest. There is no snow, no Christmas, no Sally. It's all in Kale's head. He is carry an assault rifle, sitting on the open side of a Black Hawk chopper.

By applying everything you knew about chess and compute carefully. Why?
Because you want to win. Why?

Because you want to have fun.

Your purpose of existence if what you give yourself.
Why do you live?
It usually end up in these two category.
A)To live good life in the future. How?
By working/studying hard and get a higher pay
OR
By investing in stock markets
OR
Gamble/Rob the bank

B)To enjoy life now. How?
I have earned enough and my income is decent I will lay back and enjoy my free time
OR
I barely have enough but I am content with what I have therefore I will lay back and enjoy my life
OR
I don't work but my parents/spouse/host gives me decent/some pocket money and I am able to live a good life now
OR
I don't really care what happens in the future I just wanna have fun now.

I don't know what I wanna say lol.

Playing chess does not have a purpose. The purpose is what you give yourself. The purpose of life. What are they?

Setting

The game features parallel worlds

Plot

First World

The first difference in the first world and second world was, in the second world, Sunny, a spy for The Alliance warned Kale and his team about a trap, and therefore, following his advice, Kale's team successfully found out about the Weapon of Mass Destruction, and they successfully disabled the weapon. In the first world, Sunny didn't return, which causes Kale's infiltration force is wiped out, resulting the lost of the war.

What happens here will all belong in the first world

Kale survived the ambush, along with Fera and Vince.
They were locked in a cell.
They planned to escape
During the escape, Vince is killed, and Fera is caught back.
Fera yelled, telling Kale not to go back.
Holding his tears, Kale fled into the forest.
Kale was later discovered by an enemy scout and he was pursued by a team of light soldiers.
Kale was forced to a cliff. He jumped off the cliff into the river down below.
Kale lost his memories.

Kale is saved by an old trader, and his daughter, Sally.
They live in a small village deep within the jungle.
The village's existence is unknown by the outside world.
They walked into a cave, and it leads to a underground world.
While on their way back, Kale and his party is attacked by a bunch of goblins.
According to the old trader, these goblins don't normally attack humans.
Kale was desperate to protect the old man and the girl, despite of his efforts, the old man is killed by the goblins.
Kale promised the old man to protect Sally, no matter what.

Kale escorted Sally to the village. She allows Kale to live in her hut with her mother.

Characters

The story is divided across different parallel worlds. The term, "first world" is to refer to the world where the players was in at the very beginning of the game, and "second world" is to refer to the new world the player is going to be in.

Kale/Player

The main protagonist of the story. In the first world, Kale's infiltration team is wiped out, and the events that follows leads him to Sally, and the small town he will live in with her.
